Plot summary

In a coastal town, a boy named Johnny is born with unusually large forearms and a heavy chin, and his looks make him a target for bullies at school. His parents hide him in the basement of the family home, where notes from an unseen friend arrive under the door. Frightened townspeople set the house on fire, and Johnny vanishes, leaving the town to believe the matter is settled. Years later, Tara, Dylan and Donna inherit the rebuilt house and intend to turn it into a summer camp. None of them knows its history, and once they move in, odd events begin and people in their group disappear.
