Plot summary
A vague audition notice in a coffee shop brings Wilson Clowes, an unemployed actor, to Finn, the advertising director behind a Christmas toy named Pooka. The stuffed animal repeats what people say around it, in either a friendly voice or a nasty one, and Wilson is hired to wear a large furry costume as the toy in commercials and live appearances. He learns he will be the only performer in the role and accepts once he hears the pay. Wilson meets Melanie, a real estate agent he first saw at a Christmas tree farm, and they begin dating; her son Ty gets a Pooka toy from him. Wilson also befriends Red, an older woman in his building. Wearing the costume in its nasty mode leaves him with violent outbursts and visions he cannot recall.
