Plot summary
In 968 AD, the Pandyan assassins gather again against the Chola dynasty, joined by the Rashtrakutas and other enemies of the realm. Word spreads that Prince Arulmozhi Varman has drowned in a storm at sea, and the empire mourns. He has in fact survived, feverish from the storm, and Vallavaraiyan Vandiyadevan, Poonguzhali and the spy Azhwarkadiyan Nambi hide him in a Buddhist monastery at Nagapattinam while Pandya assassins hunt the royal line. Nandini, cast out of Pazhayarai in Karikalan's absence by his sister Kundavai, has found refuge with the Pandya king Veerapandiyan. She now uses the smitten chieftain Parthibendran Pallavan to lure Crown Prince Karikalan into a trap at Kadambur Palace.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Wasifuddin Dagar claimed in May 2023 that the song "Veera Raja Veera" was adapted from a 1978 Dhrupad composition by the Junior Dagar Brothers without attribution. In February 2026 the Supreme Court closed the case, ordering the credits to name the Dagarwani Dhrupad tradition and its original recording.
- Ponniyin Selvan: II opened worldwide on 28 April 2023 in standard, IMAX, 4DX and EPIQ formats, making it the first South Indian film ever released in 4DX.
- The Ponniyin Selvan films drew controversy for showing the Cholas with the director's sect Sricharanam instead of the Shaivite Tripundra on their foreheads; before release this was fixed with visual effects, so almost all Chola characters wear a computer-generated Thiruneeru.
