Plot summary
A police convoy is drawn into an ambush in the forests near Tirunelveli by Veeraiya, a tribal insurgent leader, and his gang. Around the same time he seizes Ragini, a classical dancer, from a boating excursion. Her husband, Dev Prakash Subramaniam, is a Superintendent of Police who launches a large rescue operation and enters the jungle with a heavily armed squad, guided by Gnanaprakasam, a forest guard who knows the terrain. The state treats Veeraiya as a Naxalite outlaw, while the people of his region see him as a protector: with his brothers Singarasu and Sakkarai, he runs his own administration, shielding the villagers from exploitation. Veeraiya's men hold Ragini at a hideout on a cliff, and Dev's squad follows them into the forest.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Raavanan (2010)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- During the making of Raavanan, an elephant brought for the shoot ran amok and killed its mahout, after which the Animal Welfare Board served a show cause notice on the production company, Madras Talkies, for using elephants without permission.
- Mani Ratnam asked Abhishek Bachchan and Vikram, cast as the contrasting leads in the Hindi version, to swap roles for the Tamil version, but Bachchan grew sceptical being unfamiliar with the language and Prithviraj was cast in his place.
- For the Raavanan climax shot at the Malshej Ghats, production designer Samir Chanda built three identical wooden bridges so the final encounter could be filmed from different angles; the bridge was built in Mumbai instead of Sri Lanka, Australia or South Africa to cut costs.
- For his introduction scene, the protagonist has to jump from a 90-foot high cliff near the Hogenakkal Falls into the river below, and this risky dive was performed by a body double, Balram, a Bangalore-based former national diving champion.
- When both versions of the film were shown in more Bangalore cinemas, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce went to court and banned exhibition completely, but the Competition Commission of India stayed the ban and let Reliance Big Entertainment exhibit the film in 36 cinemas.
- Because Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan boycotted the IIFA awards held in Sri Lanka over the civil war, the film's release there was protested and theatres were torched, and films of those who attended IIFA were banned in Tamil Nadu.
- Bipasha Basu was to play Mandodari in Raavanan, but the role was scrapped to keep the film short, and singer Vidya Rao's part as the mother of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's character was also cut from the final version.
- The Ooty leg of the shoot, which began in December 2008, was delayed because local cab drivers protested the use of film federation (FEFSI) vehicles that took their business, forcing a dejected Mani Ratnam to call off the shoot and move on to Hogenakkal Falls.
