Plot summary
Michael Karthikeyan drives a delivery route for a pizzeria in Chennai and shares a home with his girlfriend Anu, an aspiring novelist. He is skeptical about the supernatural, though anything paranormal frightens him badly, and Anu insists that one day he will encounter it himself. When Anu becomes pregnant, the couple decide to marry and to save up for a celebration. Michael is shaken by his boss Shanmugam's daughter, who behaves violently and screams a name while she seems possessed. A delivery takes him to a bungalow in Anna Nagar, where a woman named Smitha lets him in and goes upstairs to fetch the money. The power fails while he waits.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Pizza (2012)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The lead character's name, Michael, came from a turkey: director Karthik Subbaraj saw a turkey that responded to the name Michael while he was scripting, and gave the name to Vijay Sethupathi's pizza delivery man.
- The makers first approached Prasanna and then Vaibhav for the lead; Vaibhav turned it down because he did not like the story. Vijay Sethupathi, who had worked on several of Karthik's short films, was eventually cast after Karthik approached him.
- Karthik wanted the bungalow genuinely dark rather than fully lit for the camera, so Vijay Sethupathi's character moves by torchlight and the crew skipped a full lighting set-up. Cinematographer Gopi Amarnath had a high-beam torch shipped from the United States after a successful test shoot.
SPOILER
Karthik has said that some distributors wanted the climax changed because they were not impressed by the change in genre it depicted, but he refused, considering it the film's high point.- While filming Pizza in Duraisamy Subway, Karunakaran injured his knee during the scene in which Vijay Sethupathi's character pushes him.
- Pizza and Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi became trendsetters, sparking a short-lived boom of short-film makers directing their feature debuts in Tamil cinema.
- Pizza was the first Tamil film to feature 7.1 surround sound, bringing the seven-channel cinema audio format to Tamil cinema.
- The makers considered Oviya for the female lead before finalising Remya Nambessan, who had played a rural character in Kullanari Koottam (2011) and was excited to take on a modern, urban role.
