Plot summary
Mercury poisoning in a hill town in South India left more than a hundred newborns disabled, and Hope Special School was opened for them. Five of its former pupils, deaf since the contamination, gather at a farm for a reunion. Michael intends to propose to Meera. Police break up their loud music and drinking and take away an iPod and a bottle, then hand the iPod back with a warning. The friends drive out late that night with Meera at the wheel. The others play with the headlights, and a man is struck down on the road. Afraid, they carry the body into the disused Corporate Earth Factory and pile leaves and logs over it.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Mercury was inspired by the 2001 Kodaikanal mercury poisoning, in which hundreds of workers were allegedly exposed to toxic mercury vapours at the now-defunct Hindustan Lever factory in Tamil Nadu, and the incident gave the film its title.
- The makers shot Mercury in secret, and the film starring Prabhu Deva was officially announced only in June 2017, after filming had already ended.
- Mercury became the first Tamil film to reach cinemas after a 48-day strike by the Tamil Film Producers Council, opening across Tamil Nadu on 20 April 2018.
- Cinematographer Tirru chose not to keep the camera steady so audiences would not suffer "visual fatigue", letting the camera float everywhere from the characters' point of view or a third person's.
- Mercury was leaked on pirate sites even though it had no scheduled release in Tamil Nadu, and Prabhu Deva and the cast urged fans not to watch the pirated versions.
