Plot summary
Geppetto, an elderly woodcarver in a small Italian village, lives with his kitten Figaro and goldfish Cleo and finishes a puppet modeled on his late son, naming it Pinocchio. He wishes on a star, and that night the puppet comes to life. The Blue Fairy tells the puppet he may become a real boy by being brave, truthful and selfless, and appoints a cricket named Jiminy Cricket as his conscience. Geppetto wakes, shocked and then overjoyed. Some days afterward the puppet is turned away from school for being made of wood, and a fox con artist called 'Honest' John, with his cat Gideon, offers him a life of fame instead.

- Jim Henson and director Steve Barron pitched a live-action Pinocchio to Walt Disney Pictures in 1985, but Disney turned the project down; Barron instead made The Adventures of Pinocchio (1996), released by New Line Cinema.
- Tom Hanks was in early talks in 2018 to play Geppetto but passed after director Paul King's departure; he rejoined in August 2020 and reportedly reached out to Robert Zemeckis for the role after reading the script, having worked with him on Forrest Gump, Cast Away and The Polar Express.
- Four songs from the 1940 original were cut from the remake: "Little Wooden Head", "Give a Little Whistle" and the reprises of "Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee" and "When You Wish Upon a Star". Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard wrote four new songs, performed by Tom Hanks as Geppetto, Kyanne Lamaya as Fabiana and Luke Evans as the Coachman.
- Oakes Fegley entered early negotiations to play Lampwick in the 2022 Pinocchio, but Lewin Lloyd was eventually cast in the role.
