Plot summary
Two stories run side by side. Around 1500, on the slopes of Etna, a young man roams a bare volcanic country, feeding on insects and small animals and avoiding the garrisons of soldiers that pass through. Animal flesh no longer satisfies him; he wants to taste human flesh, and other people begin to join him. In 1967, in a villa at Godesberg, Julian Klotz lives a flat, confined life and neglects Ida, his politicized fiancée, while his father, the industrialist Signore Klotz, urges him to get on with the marriage. Julian refuses. He keeps a secret too: whenever he can, he slips into the sty and lies down among the pigs. Two visitors, Hans Günther and Herdhitze, arrive at the villa.
