Plot summary
Mike Pearson, nineteen and held in a psychiatric hospital since his encounters with the Tall Man, pretends to have recovered so the doctors will let him go. That night he digs up graves at Morningside Cemetery and shows Reggie that every coffin is empty. Liz, a young woman linked to Mike through her nightmares, begs him to find her before the Tall Man takes her grandfather, Alex Murphy, who is dying. Reggie agrees to join the hunt, and the two load a car with weapons and drive toward the abandoned towns and emptied graveyards the Tall Man has left behind. Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Phantasm II (1988)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Don Coscarelli was pressed for a sequel but thought the first Phantasm had ended for good and did not know how to write one. His way in was to open the new film at the exact moment the old one stopped, then turn Reggie Bannister and Mike's hunt for the Tall Man into a road movie.
- Universal wanted a horror series and put up three million dollars, the smallest sum the studio spent on any of its films in the 1980s and at the same time the largest budget any Phantasm film ever had.
- Working with a major studio cost Coscarelli the strangeness of the original: Universal kept tight control and refused to let him put any dream sequences or ambiguity in the film.
- Universal made Coscarelli recast Mike with a working actor, which leaves this the only Phantasm film to replace a main character; Reggie Bannister said hardcore fans were hostile to James LeGros at first and warmed to him later.
