Plot summary
Adam Lawrence writes for Rolling Stone in New York. He is sent to Los Angeles to cover Joe McKenzie, a businessman accused of dealing drugs. While there, Adam spots a second story: fitness clubs as the singles scene of the 1980s. At The Sports Connection, a popular gym, he meets aerobics instructor Jessie Wilson and requests an interview. Jessie turns him down, recalling how the press had treated her when she was a competitive swimmer. Adam joins the club anyway and persuades other members, among them Linda Slater and Sally Marcus, to describe how the gym shapes their romantic lives.
