Plot summary
Pearl lives with her German immigrant parents on their Texas farm in 1918, kept apart from the world to guard against the Spanish flu. Her father is paralyzed and needs constant care, and her mother, Ruth, expects Pearl to stay beside him rather than at the pictures she loves. Howard, Pearl's husband, is serving in the war. Pearl longs for a career as a dancer or a movie actress, and Ruth disapproves. Pearl's wealthy sister-in-law, Mitsy, tells her about tryouts for a dance troupe elsewhere in the state, and Pearl sees a way off the farm. In town, a projectionist takes an interest in her.
