Plot summary
In the mid-1960s, John Skillpa works at a bank in the small Nebraska town of Peacock and lives by himself. He hides a second identity, a woman named Emma, who cooks his breakfast and does his chores each morning before he leaves the house. While John is at the clothesline as Emma, a freight car derails into his yard and neighbors come to look, so he tells them Emma is his wife and that they married in secret. Mayor Ray Crill and his wife Fanny, who runs a shelter for women, want a political rally held in the yard, and Fanny persuades Emma to agree. A young mother, Maggie, then arrives asking for money to leave Peacock with her son.

- The train derailment in Peacock was a visual effect: line producer Brian Bell said the train was digitally edited to appear in John Skillpa's backyard even though it was not physically there. The shot took four hours to film but lasts only about 10 to 15 seconds.
