Plot summary
Doctor Valois has invented a cure for depression. He calls the treatment "flashage", and before offering it to any patient he tested it on monkeys. His first human patient is Alain Durieux, and the case goes well: the treatment is judged a success and the people around Valois are pleased. Jeanne, Alain's wife, is not. She sees the change in her husband's personality and it worries her. Other patients also come to Valois for the same cure, and for them it works just as well as it did for Alain. The doctor is happy with what the method is doing for them.
