Plot summary

In Catalonia during the 1930s, several children are born unable to feel physical pain. They are brought to a monastery that now serves as a hospital, where Dr. Holzmann tests procedures he hopes will give them sensation, while his colleague Dr. Carcedo argues the children should be locked away in his asylum at Canfranc. One patient, Benigno, is remarkably intelligent and quick to violence, which Carcedo cites as proof. In the present day, neurosurgeon David wakes in a hospital after a car crash that killed his pregnant wife; their premature baby survived. Told he has lymphoma and needs a bone marrow transplant, David asks his parents to donate, and learns he was adopted. He sets out to find his biological parents.
