Plot summary
Huang Huo-tu is a mainlander detective in Taiwan who took a mundane foreign affairs post as self-punishment for reporting corruption inside the force, and his colleagues no longer speak to him. A gun battle in which his daughter was held hostage has left her distressed, and his wife, Ching-fang, is divorcing him. When strange deaths baffle Taipei police, among them a foreign preacher found disemboweled, FBI agent Kevin Richter comes to help. Richter, an expert on serial killers, has studied murders whose victims seemed willing to die, and Huang becomes his liaison. The scenes point to forces beyond nature: a businessman was found frozen in his office during a heatwave, and an official's mistress was burned though no fire occurred in her apartment. Richter doubts this, while Huang suggests a local cult.
