Suryaprakash's arrogant sister Neelambari, Padayappa's cousin, grows obsessed with him. Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Padayappa (1999)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Padayappa's final cut ran to 19 reels, which was considered too lengthy, so Rajinikanth suggested releasing it with two intervals. Kamal Haasan, shown the uncut film, advised against that, and Ravikumar and editor Thanigachalam cut it down to 14 reels.
- Rajinikanth had Ravikumar act alongside him in a sequence, then felt the shot looked wrong and ordered re-takes. After the re-takes, a cameraman revealed Rajinikanth had made Ravikumar do seven takes to teach him a lesson for all the takes Ravikumar had required of him.
- Co-producer Thenappan registered Padayappa's film posters as a Class 34 trademark in 1998, to be used on items such as beedis, cigarettes, cheroots and tobacco, making it the first instance of brand extension in the Tamil film industry.
- A. R. Rahman asked Ravikumar if the soundtrack could be released in August 1999; told he would be blamed for any delay, Rahman finished both the soundtrack and the background score with a live re-recording to meet the deadline.
- The film's climax was among the first scenes to be shot, and was filmed in a single take using two cameras, with around 2,000 extras used for the scene.
- Animal activist Nikhil Talreja criticised a scene showing a bull charging at Vasundhara, who wears a red saree, accusing the filmmakers of spreading the regressive myth that bulls charge at red; the creatures are red–green colour blind.
- Meena and Nagma were earlier considered for the role that went to Ramya Krishnan. Ravikumar suggested Krishnan's name to Rajinikanth, and she accepted because the negative character was opposite a superstar and no one else was ready to do it.
- Padayappa was the first Tamil film released worldwide with over 200 prints and 700,000 audio cassettes, arriving in cinemas on 10 April 1999, the eve of Tamil New Year's Day.
