Plot summary
Sethuraman, a scientist and watchmaker, lives with his wife Priya and their baby son Manikandan. He has finished a device called Project 24, a watch that can move its wearer through time. His twin brother Athreya, a gangster, comes after the watch, and Sethuraman flees with the child. On a train he asks a stranger, Sathyabhama, to take care of the boy. Twenty-six years later, Manikandan works as a watch mechanic and believes Sathyabhama is his mother. He repairs a watch for a young woman, Sathya, and falls for her. Athreya wakes after a long coma, wanting the watch and the years it took from him.

- Actor Anil Kapoor planned legal action against 2D Entertainment because the title look and logo of 24 seemed similar to the American TV series 24, for which Kapoor had bought the remake rights from 20th Century Fox International TV; the case settled in April 2015.
- In February 2010, director Vikram Kumar announced he had dropped the film after actor Vikram and the film's producer rejected his refined script; he walked out over differences of opinion and said he would approach a leading actor in future.
- The film's trailer, teaser and first-look posters showed Suriya paragliding, but editor Prawin Pudi removed those sequences for time constraints; he said paragliding was Mani's hobby and was meant as an introductory scene.
- Kumar held preliminary discussions with Mahesh Babu, who loved the script but was unsure about being able to play triple roles and eventually passed on the offer.
