Plot summary
In 1304, as Stirling Castle comes under siege, Robert Bruce, John Comyn and their allies submit to Edward I of England and swear him homage. He trades blows with Edward, the Prince of Wales, the king's son. A widower, he is pledged in marriage to Elizabeth, the king's goddaughter. James Douglas, Lord of Douglas, petitions for the return of his family's estates and is refused, his father having been judged a traitor. The king and the prince leave Scotland, and Bruce and Comyn answer to Aymer de Valence, Earl of Pembroke. Bruce weds Elizabeth but waits to consummate the marriage, since she is thirteen, and she becomes close to his daughter Marjorie. News that William Wallace has been executed sets off rioting, and Bruce, seeing how little the Scots want English rule, prepares to rebel.
