Plot summary
Alex lives in Manhattan, and she has told Dana, the man she is engaged to, that her family is dead. She travels back to South Carolina when her sister Jeannie marries, to stand as a bridesmaid, and she keeps the engagement to herself so that the bride keeps the attention. Jeannie is high-maintenance and the sisters are estranged. Announcing the man Alex plans to marry would raise another matter she would rather avoid, since he is a Jewish African American. At the wedding, Jonathan, her sharp-tongued best friend, says something that leaves the guests believing Alex is gay and that Dana is a woman.
