Plot summary
Ma Ke served as artistic director for the Shanghai Chinese Opera Theater. The Cultural Revolution barred him from working for a decade, and afterward he gave himself over to that world. Its pull shaped his son Maleonn, now a conceptual artist in China, while Ma Ke's absences stirred early resentment in the boy. Maleonn learns that his father has Alzheimer's and sets out to build a theatrical piece called Papa's Time Machine, made with human-sized puppets and scenes drawn from his own memories of Ma Ke, and asks his father to take part. He wants the work to bring them together as artists and as family.
