Plot summary
For decades Addie Moore and Louis Waters have lived next door to one another in Holt, a small Colorado city, and they hardly know each other. She is a widow; he is a widower. One evening Addie comes to his door and asks whether they might pass their nights in the same house, not necessarily as lovers, since both are lonely and neither sleeps well. Louis is startled and asks for time to think. After sitting with men who gossip about their neighbors, he calls her and agrees. Their first evenings are awkward, and he admits he speaks little.

- Netflix faced calls to retitle Our Souls at Night for its UK release because the first two words, read aloud, sound like "arseholes", an obscenity in British vernacular. Netflix said it had no intention of retitling the film.
- Our Souls at Night was the final collaboration between Jane Fonda and Robert Redford, who had previously co-starred in The Chase, Barefoot in the Park and The Electric Horseman.
