Plot summary
In Glasgow, Mrs Flynn has died, and her children come together to arrange her funeral. Michael, Thomas and John Flynn, three brothers, are joined by their sister Sheila, who is disabled. They mourn their mother in their own ways, sometimes heartfelt and sometimes strange. They gather on a gray day in Glasgow, with a storm building that could bring damage to the city.

- Channel 4 Films funded Orphans but refused to distribute it, judging it commercially weak. Peter Mullan said that once the film began winning awards, Channel 4 apologized and asked to distribute it, and he refused the offer.
- Peter Mullan has said Orphans is not autobiographical, but he wrote it shortly after his mother's death, and each of the four main characters represents an element of what he was feeling at the time.
- Orphans was the first full-length film Peter Mullan directed. He later won a Best Actor award at Cannes for My Name is Joe and went on to direct The Magdalene Sisters and Neds.
