Plot summary
Shay studies African-American history, with the Civil War as her focus, and she and her roommate Jasmine are running out of money. Kate, who grew up in a plantation home nearby, has come back to it with her three children to care for her dying mother, and she offers Shay a job. Shay visits the house, meets Andrew, Chase and Blair, and leaves without planning to take the work. A nightmare she has had since childhood keeps returning: a door whose handle is red glass. When Kate calls in the night, needing someone to stay with the children while she goes to the hospital, Shay turns her down until Kate offers five hundred dollars for the night.
