Plot summary
Investigating Judge Varga is murdered in Palermo. Strikes, demonstrations and a standoff between the Left and the governing Christian Democrats form the backdrop. The police put Inspector Amerigo Rogas on the case. Two further judges die while he opens his inquiry, and the three men killed had worked together on several cases. Rogas finds signs of corruption around three government officials, and he also seeks out men whom the murdered judges had convicted. His superiors want him off gossip about corruption; they tell him to look instead for a single madman who is going about killing judges for no reason.
