Plot summary
Cliff is a boy in Glen Allan, Mississippi, in the middle of the twentieth century, and his young mother cannot raise him. Ma Pearl and Poppa take care of him, and after a couple of years Ma Ponk raises him with Poppa's help. Nearly all the adults around him work as laborers, most often in the fields, and Ma Ponk picks cotton in a white farmer's field. Cliff goes to school in a single bungalow with the children of maids, servants and farm workers. He and Poppa attend a parade held by the Ku Klux Klan, where a Klansman confronts them for being African American. Most people in the town belong to a Christian church, and Ma Ponk sings in its gospel choir.
