Plot summary
In the 1950s, Muriel accepts Lee Walker's marriage proposal at Christmas in Kansas, shortly after his brother Julius leaves the Navy following the Korean War. Lee and Muriel plan to move to California once Lee's own military service ends, and Julius is invited to live with them there. Six months later the couple are married in San Diego, but Julius takes his own path to Las Vegas, where a casino manager hires him to watch the gaming floor from a loft behind a one-way mirror. Muriel waits tables, bets on horses, and hides her winnings from Lee, and while viewing houses outside the city she meets a neighbor, Sandra. At the casino, Julius grows close to Henry, who works beside him in the loft.
