Plot summary
On the voyage back to Ithaca after the Trojan War, Odysseus and his crew, among them Homer, Perimedes, Eurylochus and Christos, are lost in a deep fog. Winged creatures come out of it and kill several of the men; a wooden stake through the heart is the only thing that stops them. The crew puts in at the Isle of Mists to mend the ships and rest after the attack. The creatures attack again, and then a mysterious woman leads the men to a shelter in the woods that the creatures leave alone. Several of them take her food and lodging but keep their guard up. They hear of the Hellfire Cross, a sword the gods locked away on the island, and believe it can help them survive.
