Plot summary

Satellites and transmission stations fail when solar flares strike, and the polar ice cap melts. Tidal waves wipe out Bangladesh and the west coast. A scientist works out that the magnetic core of the planet is weakening, and that the ozone layer will thin and leave the Earth unprotected from solar flares. He plans to use two colliders, at CERN in Switzerland and in the United States, to create black holes that speed the Earth's rotation and steady the core, and he sets off across the Atlantic in a keelless motorboat with stragglers he finds floating along the way.
