Plot summary
At the start of the gold rush in 1899, Sean McLennon holds most of the property titles around Nome and declares that only American citizens may legally file placer claims, using his influence over local politics and law enforcement. Hudson Santeek, a hunter of white and American Indian parentage, bought his adoptive family's land in order to keep miners away from it. McLennon's men come for him; he escapes, and his adoptive father, an elderly Athabaskan chief, is killed by one of the gang. Santeek returns to Nome and confronts McLennon in his bedroom, and Sarah, McLennon's young Irish immigrant wife, intervenes with a gun. Santeek takes her with him onto the tundra by dogsled, and McLennon, without the sheriff's permission, forms a posse to go after them.
