Gerry Lopez

Biography

Gerry Lopez is an American surfer, surfboard shaper, journalist and actor who grew up in East Honolulu, Hawaii, and was the Hawaii State Champion at fourteen. He became known for his tube riding, moved out to Oahu's North Shore, and won the Pipeline Masters in 1972 and 1973. He helped start the Lightning Bolt Surfboards brand and designed its jag logo, and in 1999 the Surf Industries Manufacturing Association named him Waterman of the Year. As an actor he worked mostly with the fellow former surfer John Milius, playing Subotai in Conan the Barbarian (1982), and he also appeared in Big Wednesday (1978), North Shore (1987) and Farewell to the King (1989). His surfing documentaries include Step Into Liquid (2003) and Riding Giants (2004), and he wrote the 2008 book Surf Is Where You Find It.
