Plot summary
Constable Graham McGahan's tinnitus has grown severe, and he asks for lighter duty. He is put to work nights in a police information van in Sunshine, an inner-western Melbourne suburb, where two killings weigh on the community: an engaged woman has been found dead there, and seven passengers have been killed on a train. Among the shaken residents who come to the van are Lucky Phil, who is mentally handicapped, and Dean Stouritis, who had been engaged to the woman who died. Lavinia Smart boarded the train shortly after the passengers were killed, and the police are unhappy with what she tells them.
