Plot summary
His parents worry about the scary stories Alex writes, so he takes his notebooks down to the basement to burn them. The elevator stops on a dark floor, and an open door shows a television playing his favorite film. Inside, he eats a slice of pumpkin pie, blacks out, and wakes in the apartment of a witch named Natacha. A closet there holds the clothes of children she found useless. Natacha tells him he must tell her a fresh story every night or die, and sets him to work beside Yasmin, a girl she lured in Washington, D.C. The apartment travels the world looking for victims, only Natacha's keys open its doors, and her cat Lenore watches them.
