Plot summary
Raimund Gregorius teaches in Bern and leads a solitary life. One morning on his way to school he pulls a young woman in a red coat off a bridge railing, and she walks with him to the school before slipping out during his class, leaving her coat behind. In its pocket are a small Portuguese book by Amadeu de Prado and a train ticket to Lisbon that departs within minutes. The bookseller who sold the book remembers the woman. Raimund takes the train, reads the book along the way, and reaches Lisbon set on finding both the woman and the author. There he finds the house where Adriana, Amadeu's sister, lives, and starts asking about her brother.
