Giovanni is a young cat with bluish fur. His father is away fishing and his mother is ill at home, and after school he sets type at a print shop. In class one day the teacher asks what the galaxy is made of; Giovanni cannot answer, and Campanella stays quiet so that their classmates will not tease him. That night the town holds the Festival of Stars, where Giovanni is mocked for expecting an otter-skin coat from his father. He runs to a hill at the edge of town, and a steam train appears.
