Plot summary
In an undersea kingdom, Princess Marina, the youngest of six daughters, swims with her best friend Fritz, a dolphin. Her older sisters have come of age and may visit the surface; Marina may not, since her grandmother's pearl hairpin is not yet hers. Exploring a sunken ship, she finds a statue of a human prince, and she and Fritz slip up to the surface to see him aboard his ship. When a storm throws him into the sea, Marina carries him to shore and leaves him there. A raven-haired girl finds him. Because Marina rescued a human, her grandmother decides she has come of age and gives her the pearl hairpin. Wanting to see the prince again, Marina goes to the Sea Witch, who offers a potion that will make her human in exchange for her voice.
