Plot summary
More than a hundred people who worked on the Nightmare on Elm Street series give interviews here, from the original film through all of its sequels. Their accounts are joined by rare production material and behind-the-scenes footage never shown publicly. The documentary follows the making of each entry, describing where the idea of a killer who hunts his victims in their sleep came from and how the effects work was achieved. It also covers the growth of the small independent company that released the series and built its reputation on it, and the place Freddy Krueger and the franchise hold in horror and in popular culture.

- The documentary settled a long argument about A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge, whose imagery seemed unmistakably gay while the filmmakers had always denied any such intention: in his interview segment, screenwriter David Chaskin admitted the homosexual themes were written into the script deliberately.
- As interest in the documentary grew the producers contacted a number of Elm Street alumni and were in turn contacted by many others; the final total of unique interviews came to 106 individuals.
