Plot summary
Garlow sits on the California Trail, and its preacher has made it a dry town, with no alcohol, gambling or prostitution. Patrick Tate, an Irish immigrant, works there as a carpenter and undertaker. He and his wife Audrey never reached California; now that the town has quieted, he wants to move on, but Audrey wants to stay. One night three men come to the house asking after Bill Crabtree. Their leader, Dutch Albert, keeps Dumb-Dumb and Sicily with him. Dutch introduces himself, buys the innkeeper's hotel and reopens it as a saloon with gambling and prostitutes. The death toll in the town rises, and as Patrick's trade benefits, his family comes under threat.

- Ivan Kavanagh told Davide Abbatescianni in an interview on Cineuropa that his main inspiration when writing Never Grow Old was frontier photographs from the 1850s onwards, along with the hymns of the time, which were about hardship, the misery of life and a better life in Heaven.
