Plot summary
The film opens with members of Neil Young's band talking about the album and the concerts, then settles into two nights at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville that August. Young had written and recorded Prairie Wind in the same city only months earlier, in the days before his operation for a brain aneurysm. The first half of the show draws entirely on that record, and the second presents acoustic songs from across his career, including numbers he had first recorded in Nashville. Between songs he tells where several of them came from, among them a guitar once owned by Hank Williams and the ranch caretaker who prompted Old Man.
