Plot summary

A prison break in Naples puts the thief Felice Sciosciammocca and Faina, a bandit, on the run together. They rob a Turkish eunuch traveling to Sorrento to take up a post, and Felice keeps the man's letter of recommendation for himself, hoping the position will bring him and his accomplice some money. The letter admits Felice to the household of Don Pasquale, a wealthy and jealous grocer who has sent for a eunuch to watch over his wife Giulietta and his daughter Lisetta, who is betrothed to Don Carluccio with a dowry. Don Pasquale takes the supposed Turk in and begins to test him at once. The new guardian is a womanizer, and the girls of the town take to him while the young men do not.
