Plot summary
Earl Montgomery's goal of joining the police ends when he flunks the academy for causing an explosion. Hank Rafferty is an LAPD officer who investigates a warehouse heist alongside Charlie Reed, who is killed before the thieves get away. Kept off the case, Hank stops to question Earl, who is locked out of his car, and Earl insults him until Hank tries to arrest him, then panics at a bee. A passerby films what looks like a beating, and Earl backs the lie. Hank is fired and serves six months. Once released, he takes work as a security guard and keeps digging into Charlie's death, while Earl works for the same security company. At a soda warehouse, Hank interrupts a heist, a gunfight erupts, and the two cross paths again.

- The lead was first shaped for Jamie Foxx, who was in line for it in January 2000. Warner Bros. then passed on the project altogether, and by October 2000 Columbia Pictures had it with Martin Lawrence negotiating a $20 million-per-picture deal covering both this film and a sequel to Blue Streak.
