Plot summary

Muffin is a Golden Retriever puppy in Sydney. He shares a home with a human family and with his own mother, calls himself Napoleon, and pretends to be tough. He wishes he could live with the wild dogs; he can hear howling in the distance. At a birthday party, a basket hung with balloons is one of the decorations. Napoleon climbs inside and pulls the ropes loose from their tether, and the basket floats away. It carries him high above Sydney and out over the sea. A galah named Birdo lands on the basket and offers his help, then pops the balloons, and Napoleon comes down unharmed on a beach. He pays no attention to Birdo's suggestion that he return home and sets off into a forest, where at night he begins to fear being alone.
