Plot summary
Amy Winslow teaches crime fiction at Elmstead College in Garrison, Washington, and helps organize its Mystery Book Festival. The keynote speaker is her father, Graham Winslow, an emeritus professor and author of the Atticus Keller mysteries. The festival gathers people from his past: Rick Fitch, a former friend who took the idea of Graham's first book, Betsy Crane, Graham's former editor and now Rick's, Hannah Steinhousen, president of his fan club's Frankfurt chapter, and Celia Bunton, his New York editor, whom he is meeting in person for the first time. Phil Jenk, a Reno detective Graham once hired as a consultant, arrives with an invitation carrying a coded message about Graham. A break-in at Amy's office appears to take nothing. Then a guest is killed, and Detective Travis Burke makes an arrest that Amy believes is wrong.
