Plot summary

Tess Harper, a doctor at Boston's Bayside General Hospital, cannot turn down a request for help. Her friend since childhood, Amber Tilton, is marrying Jack at a resort outside Chicago, and Tess will be there as maid of honor. She also hopes the trip helps her bid for a fellowship at Northwestern, since a member of the selection committee will be at the wedding. Her boyfriend of two years, the stockbroker Dex Richmond, backs out at the last minute to further his career, so Tess goes without him. At the resort she clashes with Michael, the groom's best man, a divorce lawyer who is cynical about weddings and would prefer to enjoy the resort's amenities.
