Plot summary
Danny Tate, a journalist who is a recovering alcoholic, is in Los Angeles for work that includes an interview with Hervé Villechaize. Villechaize feels insulted when Tate ends the conversation to keep a later appointment with Gore Vidal, and he criticizes Tate's career. Tate pays the bill and leaves, arriving late for Vidal, who walks out. That night Villechaize calls and insists that the interview continue. Tate agrees, in part to stop himself from drinking again. A limo arrives, and the two men travel through the city while Villechaize describes his life, including his parents' reaction to his dwarfism, his mother's resentment and his father's attempts to cure it, and his time as a painter.
