Plot summary
Yacht rock is a retroactive label for the West Coast soft rock of the late 1970s and early 1980s. A 2005 online comedy series by J. D. Ryznar and Steve Huey gave the genre its name, and the documentary gathers the musicians along with the people who coined it. Christopher Cross, Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, and Toto members David Paich and Steve Porcaro are among the interviewees, along with David Pack of Ambrosia, session players, journalists, and critics. Musicians such as Questlove, Thundercat, Prince Paul, Mac DeMarco, and Fred Armisen take part, as do Ryznar and Huey. They discuss the genre's links to soft rock, jazz, rhythm and blues, and studio musicianship, and where yacht rock ends and other soft rock acts begin. Donald Fagen declined an interview request, though six Steely Dan songs were licensed for the film.
