Plot summary
Leonato, the governor of Messina, has a daughter, Hero, and a niece, Beatrice. Two couples form the center of the story: Hero with Claudio, a count of Florence, and Beatrice with Benedick of Padua. Don Pedro, Prince of Aragon, arrives with Claudio and Benedick as his companions, and with his half-brother, Don John, the Bastard Prince. Conrade, a follower of Don John, is a woman and his lover in this version; some minor roles are folded into Leonato's aide; and Ursula, one of Hero's attendants, takes over scenes written for Margaret. Dogberry leads Messina's night watch, with Verges as his partner.

- Joss Whedon shot the entire film in black and white over 12 days with cinematographer Jay Hunter, working during a contractual vacation from the post-production of The Avengers, and had cast and crew keep the project secret until shooting finished.
- Whedon filmed the movie at the house his wife built, saying he knew from the moment he set foot in it that he would want to film something there.
- Anthony Head was originally intended to play Leonato but was unavailable, so Clark Gregg, who had worked with Whedon on The Avengers at the time, stepped in to take the part.
- The film was awarded the Guinness World Record for having the most people record a Blu-ray or DVD commentary, with 16 participants.
- The film was shot hand-held on digital cameras, often a RED Epic, and a Lensbaby Composer with Double Glass lens on a Canon 7D was used to differentiate certain scenes.
