Plot summary
Summer Beverly is raising her son Major alone after the death of her husband Jerrel, and his outbursts wear her down. A free library appears outside their home holding a VHS tape of Mr. Crocket's World, a children's show hosted by Mr. Crocket, who performs with his puppets, and Major becomes obsessed with it. Rhonda, a homeless woman whose own son Darren disappeared a year earlier, warns Summer that the show is dangerous. One night Mr. Crocket steps out of the television and pulls Major through a portal he draws with a magic marker, and Summer sets out to get him back. She meets Eddie Briggs, who believes her story.

- Brandon Espy came up with the concept for Mr. Crocket after seeing his eldest son obsessively watch the children's television show Blippi, and wondered what it would be like if the character came out of the television set.
- Elvis Nolasco was chosen to play Mr. Crocket because he wanted the role, and he stayed in character throughout filming, introducing himself to the cast and crew as Mr. Crocket.
- The crew chose practical effects over visual effects, feeling it would better keep the film's '90s feel and that horror fans would appreciate it.
