Plot summary
At night on a Naples pier, Guy Van Stratten and his girlfriend Mily find a man dying of a knife wound. He refuses the police and offers them names worth millions: Gregory Arkadin and Sophie. Guy is jailed for tobacco smuggling; once out, he and Mily try to learn why the names matter. In Cannes, Arkadin's bodyguards keep them away from the tycoon, so Guy befriends Raina, Arkadin's daughter, while Mily, a cabaret singer, angles for work at Arkadin's parties. At a masquerade ball in the castle, Guy finally meets Arkadin, who shows him a dossier of Guy's own record and offers a deal: trace his past, which he claims amnesia erased before 1927, when he finds himself in Zurich with a briefcase of Swiss francs. Guy starts with the two names and the year.
