Plot summary
An alien spacecraft crashes in a U.S. national park, and a mosquito that feeds on the dead pilot mutates into a giant insect. Megan and Ray are on their way to a summer camp when their car strikes one of the creatures, and Ray pulls its severed proboscis from the radiator. Park ranger Hendricks is ordered by the chief to spray gaseous repellent. Three bank robbers, Earl, Junior and Rex, arrive in the park; when Rex goes to an outhouse he meets a giant mosquito and runs, shouting for help, and Junior shoots him by accident. Earl destroys the insect with a shotgun. Two rangers fishing on the water come under attack too.

- The mosquito that explodes when shot by Earl was a rubber puppet packed with the crew's leftovers from their lunch break, to simulate the insect's organs and fluids. The film's original special effects artist supposedly left the set to smoke cigarettes and never returned.
- The film went through four titles: written as Skeeters, changed to Blood Fever once the makers learned a similar killer-mosquito film called Skeeter had just been produced, renamed Nightswarm in post-production, and finally released as Mosquito.
- The most expensive shot in the film was the stock footage of a mosquito being born, shown in the opening scene, which the production bought for $1,500.
- Director Gary Jones originally planned the film around a group of criminals, beginning with a large bank heist and ending with a violent shootout, but that version was deemed too expensive.
