Plot summary
A field of 538 applicants is narrowed to 30 finalists, and 15 young sailors are chosen after selection trials in Long Beach, California. Training begins in Honolulu, Hawaii, in January and runs in two-week blocks into June, with a break in May, aboard the 52-foot Morning Light, a boat bought from Philippe Kahn. The crew, of varied sailing experience, includes Kate Theisen, Genny Tulloch, Charlie Enright, Robbie Kane, Mark Towill, the youngest at 18, navigator Piet van Os and skipper Jeremy Wilmot, 21. They aim at the Transpacific Yacht Race, 2,300 miles from Los Angeles to Honolulu against professional crews.
